Whilst trees provide shade and make our landscapes more beautiful, their importance stems far beyond that. The value of trees is enormous. In fact, their existence is vital for people, wildlife and the environment.
These are some of the many different reasons why it’s important that we plant trees:
- Deforestation is a severe problem that is causing rising carbon dioxide levels. High carbon dioxide levels trap heat into the atmosphere. Trees keep our earth cool by absorbing these harmful gases.
- The saying “trees are the lungs of the earth” is a fact. Trees clean the air that we breathe by absorbing pollutants and releasing clean oxygen. They make our earth a healthier place for all of us.
- Trees provide local communities with wood to create homes, wood that can be burned to stay warm and wood to cook. Besides, trees provide local communities with jobs.
- Trees can prevent natural disasters such as landslides, floods, and over-saturation.
- Trees provide a habitat for thousands of species and thereby play a vital role in biodiversity.
- Some trees produce nutritional food such as berries, fruits, and nuts which are great for both humans and animals.
- Being able to spend time in nature plays a huge role in mental health.
